12-Volt Outlet for Phone Installation

The placement of the cigarette lighters in the ashtrays (either below the climate control controls or at the back of the center console for back seat use) is awkward for cell phone use. The R45 connecter in the arm rest, used for the Audi Motorola phone, offers a potential 12V source for cell phone charging, but it would need a non-standard adaptor.

But all sorts of gadgets are available for StarTac phones, and I found one that plugs into a 12-Volt socket and has a speaker (which I've disconnected) and a headset jack. However, there's no way to use the factory sockets.

With parts from Radio Shack, I installed a new socket at the forward end of the box under the armrest via an in-line tap on the hot wire feeding the lighter in the rear ash-tray and by fishing the wire ahead under the trim (the bottom of the box just lifts one). I cut one hole, in the bottom of the box, to line up with an existing hole under it, and I found a convenient ground under there as well. To stabilize the whole thing, I used double-stick tape to secure the bottom of the box when I put it all back together. Since I put this in, it's been written up in detail, with instructions available here.

The left picture shows a view from back seat of the new socket socket in center well, and the right picture is a view from driver’s door of phone installed under arm rest. There’s a piece of stick-on Velcro holding the phone mount to the wood trim in front of the well. The wire is a hands free headset.
