The future of the Four Corners States depends on how climate change manifests itself there and how the population responds and adapts to that change. Education of the next couple of generation is critical in this response and adaptation. These essays were originally written for high-school students to use as source material for term papers, and that seems to have happened. I hope they are interesting as well as educational. |
Environmental Roots

Appreciation of nature is a family tradition that extends back generations for me. One concrete example of this is about 75 years old, a series of essays by my maternal grandfather that he wrote for his magazine Nature Notes in the late 1930s and early '40s. Shortages of materials associated with World War II put an end to Nature Notes' short run, but the sentiments expressed in these editorial columns he called Through the Cabin Window foreshadow much of what has since become mainstream environmental thought. I spent many hours walking in the woods with Grandfather, and no doubt much of what he advocates in these columns rubbed off and has influenced my career. |
